So last night Denis and I met up at my office and drove over to the vicinity of the Belk Theater for dinner before the show. I hate driving in uptown Charlotte because they don’t let you make right or left turns off the main thoroughfares, so if you miss what you are looking for you have to drive about 15 blocks out of your way before you can come back and try again. And finding a parking garage is miserable in that section of town (although I love that it’s only $5 for the whole night to park in a garage).
We finally parked and were on our way over to the restaurant we had selected when Denis said to me, “Did you see who that was?” I turned back and saw two guys hanging out and since it was dark and I couldn’t really see, I said, “Nope.” “That was Colin and Brad!” “WHAT?” I said. “Why didn’t you tell me?” “I just did,” he said. “I would have talked to them!” “Well, you can go back if you want.”
So I did. They were hanging out across the street from the theater, with their local handler hanging out nearby. “Hey,” I said as I approached them. “I just wanted to come say hi – I’m going to the show tonight.” “Oh, good!” Brad said. Then Colin said, “We’ll be there, too,” to which I responded “Well that’s a relief because then I would have wasted money on the ticket.” They laughed and I wished them well and walked away. It was when I was about 50 feet away that I began kicking myself – I should have pulled out my cellphone and taken my picture with them! D’OH!!! I was so ticked at myself.
We ate a quick meal (the restaurant was SUB PAR in every way) then arrived at the theater just before curtain time. The show was a lot longer than we expected (it began at 7:30 p.m. and ending around 10 p.m. with a short intermission). It was also hilarious. One of the funniest things they did was not improv necessarily, although it did have that involved. They did the game where each sentence has to begin with the next letter of the alphabet. Example: All day long I waited for you. But I can’t help that I was late. Could you try harder next time? Don’t think I won’t! Anyway, so they did it in the style of opera singers, but what made it funny was that they were blindfolded, and there were 100 live mousetraps on the floor around them. I had tears in my eyes from that one, even though the humor came from the mousetraps, not from the actual improv scene they were doing.
A fun night out!!
