Phew! The Dust Settles!

Well, the closing happened yesterday without a hitch! The house is ours! And with that, the furniture frenzy is over – I have purchased all of the major pieces of furniture for the house. All that’s left is little incidental stuff that I’ll wait and deal with after we unpack all our stuff and see just where we stand. Some stuff that I ordered gets delivered next week, some the week after we move in and the rest comes at least 2-3 weeks after we’re in if not longer.

Today Denis met up with a security system guy to go over the security setup we have in the house and arrange for a couple additional things. Notably, we’re having sensors put on the kids’ windows. The reasons are twofold: Invaders coming in will set off the system if they try to abduct our kids, and if we stay in the house for 15+ years the kids will not be able to sneak out if they become wayward teenagers. Score! I’m also having them put in a third motion detector in the upstairs hallway, but that’ll only get used when we’re on a family vacation or in serious lock-down mode with our aforementioned wayward teens.

Denis also took over a few items for Beau to use during his visit. He’s coming to SC in order to visit at a college where he sent his resume. He’s playing the whole “I just happened to be in town” thing when really he came down specifically to try to get a leg up on the competition and get hired. Since we don’t have room at the apartment we’re setting him up with an airmattress with pillows and blanket, a lamp, a couple tray tables, and a rocking chair. He’s there for two nights but we plan on taking him out for meals so he doesn’t have to stare into an empty refrigerator (although I suppose we can always get him groceries since we have full electric power).

Last night we went shopping for a washer/dryer and really lucked out at Lowe’s. The set that I wanted from Sears was no longer available so we drove over to Lowe’s to use the 10% discount coupon that we had. I had researched online and found another set I was interested in. Well, turns out that the set had THREE rebates going: a $100 gift card from Lowe’s, three years of laundry detergent, and free delivery. With those three AND the 10% discount AND the 10-year maintenance plan from Lowe’s, it was a no brainer. So we orderd the Bosch Nexxt 500 Series Front-Loading Washer and Dryer. We did not get pedastals since I plan on installing a basic countertop and upper cabinets in the laundry room sometime next year.

Motion detectors, being out of town and cats that wander around is not a combination that works. Just saying….

You can set a weight limit on the motion detectors. To accommodate Cooper we’ll set it at 45 pounds (Cooper is 35 lbs). As someone else said, “If you have a 45 lb human intruder I don’t think there is much to panic about.” Anything over 45 lbs roaming the house will set off the alarms.

I think you can also set a height band or something that would excuse pets and Navy SEALS. In order to complete the detection, the detectee has to be in an upper and lower band at the same time, like within 18″ from the floor and within 4-5′ or something.
