So I took Pop’s comment and did the formal work last night in Punch, and here’s what I came up with:
Pantry would basically be floor-to-ceiling 12″ deep shelves, with the one countertop cabinet being on the right when you open the pocket door of the pantry. We also added a passthrough between the kitchen to the library – so that when I want a reading snack I don’t have to go through the dining room and great room to get to the kitchen. It should also help a lot with airflow as well since the library was closed off from the kitchen entirely and only accessible via the dining room.
I like the changes!
No breakfast room, or breakfast counter? Why not flip the dining room and library back, so you don’t give up floor/pantry space for a passageway (since I’m not sure what gave rise to that change in the first place)? I’m impressed with your design skills…looks like a fun home!
Gwynne, the kitchen island that you see will have seating – it’s a 6’x4′ island just like my mom’s and she can seat 3 comfortably in big chairs, or 4 in petite chairs. That’s more than enough for us to have. And technically, the “breakfast room” will be the porch directly off the kitchen – we made that portion of the porch very deep in order to accommodate a table and chairs for eating breakfast.
Gwynne, I had the same comment for Jaynee, but I think it has to go more with Jaynee wanting some huge library just where she wants it, while I get a small office space. I have a feeling, I’ll be taking over the “library” and Jaynee will be using the “office” for her books at some point.
The breakfast nook on the porch is nice in good weather. The original plans had a nook, but we took that out when we enlarged the kitchen and such.
Denis, I’m now thinking of moving the half bath to be between the kitchen and library somehow, thus allowing us to put our freezer in the mudroom area. That’s preferable to going outside to the garage just to get a frozen pizza, right? By doing that it would actually reduce the library a little bit.
And don’t play coy – you know I offered up an entire wall of the library to become office space for you as a combined room and you said NO.
