“The Final Cut” had an interesting premise, and for a first time writer/director it was a decent movie. The story is set in a world where implanted microchips can record all moments of an individual’s life. These chips are removed upon death so the images can be edited down into a 10-minute “highlight reel” for loved ones who want to remember the deceased.
Robin Williams is Alan Hakman, a “cutter” (memory reel editor) who has his own tormented memories to content with even while making happy memory films for those with their own secrets to hide. Jim Caveziel co-stars as a former cutter who is now against the rememory movement, claiming it infringes on the right to privacy and that the film reels are complete lies (for instance, Alan makes a rememory for a man who beat his wife but deliberately left out those clips so that family and friends only see the good things about the man).
Like I said, the premise was a good one, and Robin Williams was terrific. I think this movie would have been better had they added another 10-15 minutes of specific plot. Denis felt the movie was really slow, but I didn’t – the pacing was fine. I just think there should have been MORE detail to the movie.
