So today I created a 3-page white paper for my boss. It’s a piddling little thing – nothing fancy at all, and done in Microsoft Publisher. What can I say about Publisher. To put it in SAT terms, Publisher is to InDesign as the Family Circus comic strip is to Doonesbury. Leagues apart in every way. However, upon completion of said basic 3-page white paper, my boss exclaimed, “Hey this is great! You are going to give our marketing department a run for it’s money!” I had to laugh because I’m working for a company that should have a marketing department that is top notch. But if my cheesy 3-pager done in Microsoft Publisher is good enough, imagine what they’ll think when I actually DO something with a document.
On another note, one of the other admins here took me out to lunch today. I thought we were just going to hit up the cafeteria downstairs but instead we drove a few miles to a cute little cafe nearby. It was a long lunch, but since she’s the most senior admin here I figured it was okay. *lol* She’s a really nice older woman and loves to read Danielle Steel and Nora Roberts novels. Yee haw! I love that I have someone to discuss trashy books with.
You should tell them that you can be more productive (as well as all the other admins) if they switch to the better software. I know it will drive the IT folks crazy, blah, blah, blah, but you have to try it.
D-Man is right, and any other suggestions you can make along the way that will improve their “image”, especially in their marketing will help them recognize your abilities and value to the company. You go, girl!
