I love Kevin Kline. Denis loves Ashley Judd. But neither of those two could make “De-Lovely” an enjoyable movie. What a yawner that thing was.
The “biographical tale” of singer/songwriter Cole Porter, who was married to Linda Lee but had various affairs with men during their marriage, this one-note movie got old really quick. I mean, c’mon, we get it – he slept with men and his wife knew about it. Surely there is more to his life than that? According to filmmaker Irwin Winkler, there isn’t.
Denis said two things about this movie that hit the nail on the head.
“When a cat playing with a straw becomes more interesting than the movie you are watching, you’re in trouble.”
“I have a feeling that Cole Porter’s life was much more interesting than this movie portrays.”
Not even worth the rental people – wait til it’s on TV so that you don’t have to pay for it.
1 1/2 grand pianos out of 5. The only good part is hearing the musical celebrities sing Porter songs throughout the movie.
You’d be much better off watching “Night and Day” (1946) with Cary Grant and Alexis Smith. IT’s more about his music and alludes to his homosexuality only briefly and very subtly.
Actually, Uncle Bill – they show “Night and Day” being previewed for Cole and Linda in “De-Lovely” and by that point you realize what a near-farce the Cary Grant movie is. But I do love Cary Grant, so maybe I’ll go ahead and rent it.
