TV: AI4, or Again With the Decent Singing?

It pains me, pains me to say that Constance Pheaux-Rocker once again did a decent job last night singing “My Funny Valentine”. I loved the jazzy flair, and boy can he work a camera (even if it is hyper cheesy when he does it – btw, I LOVED when Ryan made fun of him for it).

I also have to say that I adored Nikko Smith’s version of “One Hand, One Heart” from West Side Story (one of my favorite songs from any musical). He made it more RnB and I really enjoyed it.

Carrie’s song was downright BORING. She looked like a 1950s housewife last night, too.

Scott Savol – horrible. Absolutely horrible. And hello, Anthony? Singing “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” is akin to career suicide. Seriously, dude. Of ALL the songs you could have chosen, THAT was the one that spoke to you? Didn’t the NUNS sing that in the movie? You might as well have sung “The Lonely Goatherd” for heaven’s sake.

As for Bo, dear precious Bo, I really liked the fact that he just randomly picked a song and then rocked it up. I disagree with Simon’s opinion that Bo has done poorly over the past two weeks.

All in all, the AI4 contestants largely managed to pick some of the worst classic showtunes available.

What about “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables?
What about “Defying Gravity” from Wicked?
What about “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar?
“Good Morning Starshine” from Godspell?
“Aquarius” from Hair?
“Almost Like Bein’ In Love” from Brigadoon?
“If I Loved You” from Carousel?
“Children Will Listen” from Into The Woods?
“I’m Going Home” from Rocky Horror Picture Show?
“Somewhere That’s Green” or “Suddenly, Seymour” from Little Shop of Horrors?

That’s 11 songs right there that would have been better than the songs sung last night.

I wondered about the poor song choices last night. I’m thinking it’s because they had a poor selection from which to choose – copyrights and all that.

I thought Bo could have rocked on anything from Godspell or Jesus Christ Superstar.

And Constance is impressing me – he’s no rocker, but the guy can croon. Dang it. And his arrangement was great – jazzy and cool.

I loved Nikko’s song. Great arrangement to a cheesy high school choir song that made it very new.

Well, again Constantine impressed me. I thought Scott and Anthony will be in the bottom three this week and with all the publicity recently about Scott’s “record”, I’m almost willing to bet he will be going home. I thought Carrie did a good job, but she did look like a 50’s housewife. Bo…I have to semi-agree with Simon…he’s lost his “wow factor” the last 2 weeks—I look foward to seeing it again. I didn’t like that he just pointed and picked–thought that made it seem like he just didn’t care. I thought Vonzell did a good job and I just couldn’t have cared less about Nikko’s performance. I thought Anwar was not bad, but he sounds a little nasaly when he sings sometimes. I didn’t really watch Nadia’s performance…just listened. It didn’t make me turn around to watch…but I don’t know that any song from a musical would’ve done that.

Agree, agree, agree. With all of it. Constantine makes me ill, but dammit. His was the performance of the evening. And it brings me GREAT PAIN to say (type) that. 🙁

OMG I LOVE Defying Gravity from Wicked. It is a bit of an obsession and I have to tell myself constantly to stop listening/trying to sing it 😉
