It’s ironic that as I type this review the song Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division is playing on my computer right now. Because that band is featured heavily in this mockumentary film about Tony Wilson, a famous music promoter and band manager from the 1970s/80s/90s.
If you are a fan of bands such as Joy Division/New Order, Happy Mondays, or even Sex Pistols, then 24 Hour Party Peoplemay interest you. It tells the story of Manchester, England’s direct relationship with music – the punk movement (the Pistols), alternative music (Joy Division), and eventually the rave culture (Happy Mondays). Steve Coogan is brilliant as Tony Wilson – not because he so effectively captured Tony but because he was so funny as our “host” through musical time.
I enjoyed the movie, and if you love music you’d probably enjoy it as well. I give it 3 1/2 stars out of five.
