Sure, I wish Doug Benson had been there, but the Top 5 comedians still put on a great show. I thoroughly enjoyed myself last night and it was a special treat to meet all of the comedians afterwards and also get pictures taken with them.
Ralph Harris was the emcee for the night and was hilarious. I’ve been such a huge fan of his for so many years (remember when Comedy Central was TWO comedy stations? I’ve been a fan of Ralph Harris’ since that timeframe). I thought it was great that he seemed genuinely enthused about the Blumenthal theater, even stopping during the intermission to talk to folks in the audience. So great. I have a sweet spot for him because he’s so earnest in his love for comedy.
Next up was Amy Schumer. Her brand of comedy didn’t go over well in Charlotte, although she did get laughs. But her jokes were definitely meant for a more…New York City type of crowd. She was charming though, and must have a photographic memory because she asked my name during the meet & greet session after the show and proceeded to use it in conversation with me and then still remembered it about 10-15 minutes later when I asked for a picture.
Gerry Dee. What can I say? He had me in stitches when he began telling a joke about his teaching days that involved a kid with the same name as CootieBoy that included the statement, “Who on EARTH calls their kid __________, anyway?” His was the CD I bought after the show – he’s amazingly funny.
I didn’t get a picture with Lavell Crawford (although he does appear behind Ralph in the picture above). He’s just as large as one might think, and incredibly funny. I think he got the loudest applause of the night.
Jon Reep was great. As the winner of “Last Comic Standing,” I’m sure he loved playing to a hometown audience (for those who don’t know, he was born and raised in Hickory, NC). His parents were there and Jon looks JUST LIKE his Dad.
All in all it was just a REALLY fun night and I’m so glad we went.
