Gotta Love SC Tax Bills

So I went online to look up our property tax bill for 2007. And they have it ALL WRONG.

They list *our* mailing address as being the house that is now owned by the folks we bought our house from last year. Follow? According to the county website, the former owners should get their NEW HOME’S tax bill at THEIR OLD HOUSE. And our tax bill? Goes to them at their NEW house. Ridonkulous. I called to try and get it fixed and the woman I spoke with on the phone was a bit out of it. So I called another county office and think I got a better result, but am not sure. I was told the county website should update with this new information tomorrow, but there is no guarantee.

In other news, the land we own? Supposedly has a BUILDING on it and that’s how it was assessed. I told them that no, our land has NO buildings on it whatsoever and certainly didn’t have one when we bought the land in early 2006. So we’ll have to fight that one when it comes in. The only thing I can think of is that the former owner of the land had poured footings with the INTENT to build, but then opted to sell the land to us instead. But do footings that are below grade and grown over with almost 2 years worth of weeds count as a building?

The good news though? The 2007 taxes on our house comes to….

drumroll please…..

$984.

Isn’t that AMAZING? Our taxes in NoNJ would be 10x that amount this year – probably even more than 10x! SUCH a blessing and one of the main perks to living down here. They can raise our property taxes 10% every year down here and it’ll take 25 years to reach those kinds of levels. And they certainly aren’t going to raise taxes 10% every year. More like 3% – and even then, in 30 years? The taxes would still be under $3K per year.
